Laura Makabresku

Laura Makabresku is the artistic pseudonym of Kamila Kansy, a Polish photographer and visual artist born in 1987 in Brzesko, Poland. Holding a degree in Polish Philology from the Pedagogical University of Krakow, her literary background deeply permeates a photographic practice that constructs visual narratives from myths, fairy tales and everyday spirituality. Self-taught in photography, she received her first camera from her partner — now her husband — and has since developed a distinctive language marked by melancholy, the sacred and the tension between opposites.

She made her debut in 2012 at the Month of Photography in Krakow and has since exhibited her work in Poland and abroad, publishing in international magazines including Atomica, Magpie, Carne and Sova. In 2018 she received the Arteon Prize and in 2021 won the nationwide Sacred Art Competition in Poland. In 2023 she was awarded first prize at the FAFCE European Art Contest. She lives and works in the Polish countryside, where nature, silence and Catholic faith nourish a practice she describes as a search for Personal Beauty — photography that does not document reality but interrogates it from within.
