Michael Hutter

Michael Hutter is a German painter, illustrator and writer born on December 26, 1963, in Dormagen, Germany. Trained between 1983 and 1986 at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences under Professor Karl Marx, his work constructs surrealist universes of extraordinary visual density that evoke Flemish masters such as Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Brueghel, reinterpreted through a contemporary sensibility marked by cosmic horror, eroticism and religious critique.

Since 1986 he has exhibited his work in galleries across Germany, Austria and Belgium, consolidating a career of over three decades in the international dark art circuit. His creative process — which he describes as following the logic of dreams — fuses literature, philosophy, science and pseudoscience into vertically formatted compositions worked in oil on wood panel, with a palette of ochres, muted greens and deep reds that reinforce the atmosphere of his alternative worlds. Beyond his painting practice, he has developed his own narrative cycle — Melchior Grün — and has collaborated as an illustrator on fantasy books and heavy metal albums.
